Notifications from your backend

Notify one user automatically when something happens: order ready, new message, reply received.

"Your order is ready", "Marie replied to you": these notifications are sent by your backend, to one user, the moment the event happens. Bloxks delivers them; your backend only has to say who and what.

What you need

  • Push notifications wired in your app and a published build: see Push notifications.
  • A backend for your app (Bloxks sets it up with Supabase when the app needs accounts or shared data).
  • The app registers each phone with the signed-in user: the builder does it when it wires push. That is how Bloxks knows which phone belongs to which user. The app joins the user's sign-in proof, and Bloxks checks it with your Supabase: nobody can receive someone else's notifications by pretending to be them.

1. Ask for the notification

In the chat, describe the event in plain words: "Send a push notification to the buyer when the seller marks the order as ready". You can also click + under Automatic notifications in the Notifications tab: the chat opens with a New automatic notification frame, you only have to describe it.

Say who receives it, when, and what it says. If something is missing, the builder asks you before coding.

2. The builder does the rest

  • No backend yet? The builder first asks you to connect or create your Supabase account, then carries on with the notification.
  • It writes the backend function that reacts to the event and asks Bloxks to deliver the message, with the right screen to open when the user taps it.
  • It connects that function to Bloxks by itself: no key to create, copy or paste.
  • It adds the notification to the Automatic notifications list of the Notifications tab. The function sends the notification by its name, and Bloxks reads its current text there: change the text in the tab, it applies at the next send, with no new deployment and no new publication.

Done when the builder confirms a test went through, and the notification shows up on the phone of a user signed in to your published app.

Good to know

  • Title: 65 characters max. Message: 178 max. Longer texts are cut on the lock screen.
  • A notification goes to every phone of that user (iPhone and iPad signed in with the same account).
  • Each send is listed in the Notifications tab under Recent sends, with the source "Automatic".
  • Several languages? The list holds the text in each language of your app; the notification goes out in the user's language when your backend knows it (the builder takes care of it).
  • Automatic notifications keep working even if your Bloxks plan changes.

Without Bloxks

Your Apple key and your subscribed phones (Export (CSV) in the Notifications tab) are yours. With both, any backend can deliver notifications directly to Apple. We hope you never need it, but the door is open.
